In the most basic sense, a stroke is the fundamental building block of any character. If you think of a letterform as a skeleton, the strokes are the lines that give it flesh and structure. Originally derived from the physical movement of a pen or brush on paper, a stroke in digital typography refers to any of the linear elements that make up a glyph. Whether it is the strong vertical line of an ‘H’ or the elegant curve of an ‘S’, the way these strokes are drawn determines the typeface’s weight, contrast, and overall personality.
What is a Stroke in typography?
A stroke is any singular line—straight or curved—that is used to construct a character. In the days of calligraphy, a stroke was a single continuous mark made without lifting the pen. In modern digital type design, we define strokes by their direction, thickness, and how they terminate (end).
The thickness of these strokes is what we refer to as weight, and the variation between different strokes within a single letter is what we call contrast. Without strokes, there are no letterforms; they are the primary “path” that our eyes follow when we read.

Where are Strokes Placed in Glyphs?
Strokes make up every part of a glyph, but they are categorized based on their position and function within the “anatomy” of the letter:
- Vertical Strokes: Often called the “Stem,” these are the main upright pillars of a letter (like the vertical line in a ‘b’ or ‘P’).
- Horizontal Strokes: Known as “Bars” or “Arms,” these connect vertical elements (like the crossbar in an ‘H’ or the horizontal extensions of an ‘E’).
- Curved Strokes: These create the “Bowls” (the rounded parts of ‘p’, ‘b’, or ‘o’) or the “Spines” (the main curve of an ‘s’).

Types of Strokes
To understand typography at a professional level, it helps to break down the different “species” of strokes found in a font file:
1. Stem
The stem is the primary vertical stroke of a letterform. It is usually the heaviest part of the letter and acts as the structural foundation. In many typefaces, the thickness of the stem is the “master” measurement used to determine the font’s weight.
2. Bar (or Crossbar)
A bar is a horizontal stroke that connects two other strokes or attaches to a stem. Common examples include the middle line of an ‘E’, ‘F’, or ‘H’. If the stroke is open on one end (like in an ‘E’), it is often called an arm.
3. Bowl
A bowl is a curved stroke that encloses a circular or curved space (the counter). You can see prominent bowls in letters like ‘a’, ‘b’, ‘d’, ‘p’, and ‘o’. The shape of the bowl (whether it is a perfect circle or a squarish oval) defines the font’s style – geometric, humanist, or transitional.
4. Tail
A tail is a functional stroke that extends downward. The most famous example is the diagonal stroke at the bottom of a capital ‘Q’.
5. Terminal
While not a stroke itself, the terminal is how a stroke ends. It could be a sharp point, a rounded nub, or a flat cut. The design of the terminals is a “secret ingredient” that gives a font its unique flavor.
The Direction of Stroke Contrast
The “Axis” (often called the Stress) is the invisible line that passes through the thinnest parts of a curved letter, such as an ‘o’. This direction is a leftover from calligraphic traditions and determines the “energy” of the typeface.

What is the difference between a “Stroke” and a “Path”?
In design software like Illustrator, a Path is the mathematical line (the vector). The Stroke is the visual weight or “ink” applied to that path. In typography, we generally use the word “stroke” to describe the physical part of the letter you actually see.
Why do vertical strokes usually look thicker than horizontal ones?
This is an optical illusion! Our eyes naturally perceive horizontal lines as thicker than vertical ones of the same width. To make a font look “balanced,” type designers actually draw horizontal bars slightly thinner than the vertical stems so they appear equal to the reader.
What is a “Double-Story” stroke?
This refers to letters like ‘a’ or ‘g’ that have two enclosed levels or bowls. The strokes required to create a double-story ‘g’ are much more complex than a simple “single-story” loop.
How do strokes affect legibility?
If strokes are too thin, they may disappear at small sizes. If they are too thick (like in a “Black” weight), the white space inside the strokes (the counters) becomes too small, making the letters look like solid blobs. The balance of stroke thickness is the key to clear reading.
