The Bulgarian Football Union, the governing body for football in Bulgaria, saw a chance to refresh the national team’s identity. Collaborating with CauzaBG, leading sports marketing agency, we set out to create the typeface—a blend of tradition and modernity, designed to inspire both players and fans.
Facing the Challenge: Crafting a Typeface for Football Greatness
As the Bulgarian team geared up for the UEFA Nations League, our job was clear: craft a typeface that boosted team spirit and presence. This font needed to be more than just stylish—it had to work seamlessly and honor the team’s rich history.
Faced with tight deadlines and UEFA’s strict equipment rules, we needed a font that was sharp and readable. It had to capture every move on the field, whether by camera or by the crowd.
The design also needed practicality: integrating airflow into jersey numbers to keep players cool. This project also marked the centenary of Bulgarian football—a milestone worthy of a striking graphic tribute.
Merging Tradition with Modern Flair in Sports Typography
We kicked off by diving deep into the world of sports typography, drawing inspiration from football and beyond. This foundational research sparked our sketching process, where we harmonized tradition with innovation to craft visuals that truly reflect the team’s spirit.
Inspired by the Bulgarian coat of arms, we gave the numbers a bold, distinctive look. The letters were designed for legibility as players dashed across the field, ensuring clarity was always a top priority.
Progressing from concept to digital, we tackled the challenge of integrating airflow into the numbers. By stylizing the Lion’s mane, we incorporated ventilation spots that added both function and flair.
In anticipation of the Bulgarian Football Union’s centenary celebrations, we explored various iterations of the font inspired by the ornamental elements of a laurel wreath—a symbol of victory and honor. Utilizing color font technology, we seamlessly integrated the vibrant hues of the Jubilee celebration jerseys and equipment, creating a dynamic and festive typeface that honors 100 years of oranized football in Bulgaria.
Elevating Team Identity and Fan Connection
The Bulgarian Lions typeface became an instant favorite, boosting team spirit and fan engagement. It turned heads, raised jersey sales, and unified the team’s look both on and off the pitch.
