Background & Education
Born in Gorna Oryachovitsa and raised in Burgas, Plamen holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Design from the Technical University of Sofia, graduating in 2015. While in school, he worked as a graphic designer, which helped him develop an appreciation for clean, minimalistic, and well-crafted typography. He later honed his skills independently through books, blogs, and online communities dedicated to typography.
Career Path
Plamen’s career began as a graphic designer while he was still a student. Inspired by modernist masters like Armin Hofmann and Josef Müller-Brockmann, he transitioned into typography and calligraphy, gradually developing his own unique style. He officially joined Fontfabric in January 2016 as a type designer. His first projects included the popular free fonts, Phenomena and Akrobat, and his first commercial release, the bestselling Uni Neue. Now a Creative and Operational Director, Plamen is responsible for developing original type families and overseeing operations and processes within the foundry. In his spare time, he shares his knowledge through workshops and lectures.
Notable Projects & Contributions
Plamen has designed or co-designed numerous typefaces, including Penomena, Akrobat, Uni Neue, Gilam, Zing Rust, and Nexa Round. He is particularly proud of Uni Neue, his first commercial typeface, because it remains so popular with creatives and brands globally. He also has a soft spot for Zing Rust, the first project where he served as a Type Director and Project Manager, which was (and may still be) the world’s largest textured font bundle. A project he truly loves is the rebrand for Silverstone, which he feels successfully captures the speed and excitement of the brand with a display sans-serif aesthetic.

Plamen’s style is rooted in clarity, geometry, and precision, inspired by modernist masters such as Adrian Frutiger, Paul Renner, and Hermann Zapf. His background in graffiti and calligraphy adds a personal dimension, merging expressive strokes with functional letterforms. Known for his dedication and playful approach, he continues to push boundaries in type design while sharing his love for typography with others.
