Fill Axis (FILL)

The Fill axis is an adjustable attribute in select variable typefaces, letting designers transition character shapes from hollow outlines to solid, opaque forms. In some designs, internal negative space stays transparent so contours remain legible.

The word “FILL” set three times in Muller to demonstrate a fill axis: first as a blue outline only, then with a pale pink fill inside the blue outline, then solid blue — one continuous axis carrying the letterforms from hollow to completely filled.

The Fill axis (denoted by the uppercase CSS identifier FILL) is an adjustable attribute present in select variable typefaces that allows designers to transition character shapes from hollow outlines to solid, opaque forms. In certain designs, this manipulation causes internal negative spaces to become transparent conversely, ensuring that the defining contours of the glyph remain legible. The visual progression of this filling effect can emanate from the middle, an outer edge, or a specific angle of the character, moving along any geometric trajectory, which makes it highly effective for UI animations or interactive elements meant to signify a shift in user state. The numerical parameters for this setting represent a percentage-based scale, ranging from 0 to signify the baseline hollow state up to 1 for a completely saturated form.

According to contemporary web styling standards, this four-letter configuration must always be capitalized because lowercase identifiers are strictly reserved for the five foundational axes registered in the official OpenType specification.
