Morph Axis (MORF)

The Morph axis is a specialized control built into select variable font families that enables unconventional alterations to the geometric contours, scale, and placement of the individual structural pieces that form a character.

Nine blue lowercase “a”s in a row above a thin pink slider, the letterform shifting gradually in shape from left to right rather than simply getting bolder or wider — a morph axis redraws the letter itself as the slider moves.

The Morph axis, identified by the MORF code within CSS formatting, is a specialized control built into select variable font families that enables unconventional alterations to the geometric contours, scale, and placement of the individual structural pieces that form a character.

In creative typefaces like Calleo, shifting the slider from the lowest to the highest setting along this parameter smoothly animates the transitioning structural elements. Certain characters leverage this transformation to create the vivid illusion of active physical movement as the axis values are adjusted.
