Numerals, or Figures

Numerals, or figures, are the characters in a font family designed to express numerical values. Many typefaces include options to toggle between several distinct numeral styles, each suited to different layout scenarios.

The digits “0123456789” set in heavy blue condensed Phenomena on one line, with a thin dark rule running along the top of the figures and a pink rule along their baseline — showing that numerals are drawn to a shared height, the zero distinguished by a slash.

Numerals or figures designate the specific characters in a font family designed to express numerical values. Within a wide variety of typefaces, designers include options to toggle between several distinct styles of numbers tailored for diverse layout scenarios.

These characters generally manifest in two primary design structures and two distinct spacing configurations, yielding four primary combinations. They can be styled as lining figures, which match the uniform height of capital letters, or as oldstyle figures, which mirror the shifting heights and descenders of lowercase text. In terms of spacing, they can be set as proportional, where each number carries a unique horizontal footprint based on its shape, or as tabular, where every digit occupies an identical horizontal width similar to monospaced typography.

A comprehensive breakdown of these four distinct variations can be found in the instructional article, Understanding numerals.
