Script

A script is a graphic system used to visually record and communicate spoken language. When integrated with a standardized set of spelling, punctuation, and grammar rules, it forms the core foundation of a written communication system.

The word “Script” written out in flowing blue Madelyn, the letters joined in one continuous stroke with a long sweeping descender on the p and a crossed t — the look of handwriting drawn with a pointed brush.

A script is a graphic system used to visually record and communicate spoken language. When integrated with a standardized set of spelling, punctuation, and grammar rules, it forms the core foundation of a written communication system.

A single graphic system is frequently shared across multiple distinct languages. For example, while English, French, German, Norwegian, and Portuguese operate as independent tongues with unique alphabet variants, cultural guidelines, and accent marks, they all rely on the foundational Latin writing structure.

Beyond this Western standard, the international typographic ecosystem includes the Greek system, which served as the historical blueprint for Latin letters, and the Cyrillic system, which originally evolved from capitalized Greek characters. The broader global design landscape also encompasses Arabic scripts, Korean characters, Han logographs, various Indic writing systems spanning Southern and Southeastern Asia, and the ancestral writing systems native to the African continent.
