Type Foundry

A type foundry is a commercial entity or collective dedicated to the production, licensing, and distribution of original font software and digital lettering systems.

Five different blue capital “A”s in a row — slab, sans, high-contrast serif, slab and a rougher cut — each underlined by its own short pink dash, captioned in grey “FIVE FAMILIES, ONE HOUSE”: the range of designs a type foundry publishes under one roof. Set in Squad.

A type foundry is a commercial entity or collective dedicated to the production, licensing, and distribution of original font software and digital lettering systems. These enterprises are almost universally established by lettersmiths themselves, and a significant portion of modern design operations exist as independent, single-creator boutiques. The industry’s vocabulary is a direct inheritance from the historical manufacturing plants where literal metal alloys were superheated and poured into precisely carved molds to cast physical blocks of individual letters for letterpress machinery.
