FOIT (Flash of Invisible Text)

Flash of Invisible Text (FOIT) describes a web loading event where text stays completely hidden until the designated fonts finish rendering. This delay comes directly from the time it takes to download custom web fonts to a visitor’s device.

FOIT demonstrated in Glober: an empty dashed outline stands where a line of text should be, with the words Visible text below it under a pink rule — the blank gap a browser renders before the webfont arrives, then the text once it does.

The occurrence known as a flash of invisible text, or FOIT, describes a web browsing event where text remains completely hidden from view during the initial page load until the designated typefaces finish rendering. This temporary absence of text stems directly from the latency involved in downloading custom web fonts to a visitor’s hardware.

Web developers generally view this situation as an unfavorable user experience, as it leaves text-based information entirely inaccessible while the font assets are being retrieved. To mitigate this issue, creators can employ the CSS font-display property, a technique that immediately displays the text via pre-installed system fonts and then seamlessly transitions to the preferred typography once the download concludes.
