A page layout set in Mont: a small pink label reading “SET IN MONT” above a large two-line blue headline “Arranging type is the work”, with two columns of blue body copy beneath arguing that size, spacing, measure and rhythm matter more than the choice of face.

Typography is the deliberate practice of managing the layout, formatting, and composition of written text, an artistic and structural discipline that must remain distinct from actually drawing letterforms, which is known as type design. While individuals frequently bundle the selection of specific font families into this category, the initial choice of an aesthetic style is technically outside the strict definition of the craft. Instead, the true art and science of this field revolves around modifying technical parameters such as the weight of the strokes, the vertical spacing between baselines, the overall length of a column of text, and numerous other spatial configurations. When executed successfully, this discipline satisfies its most critical function by ensuring a message is fully legible, before subsequently leveraging these stylistic adjustments to control the tone, emotion, and subtle delivery of the written communication.
