Hanging Punctuation

Hanging punctuation is a typographic technique where punctuation marks are shifted past a text box’s edge into the margin (typically on the left in standard left-aligned text) to create a smoother, more aesthetically pleasing vertical alignment.

Four lines of blue text in Matt set against a thin pink vertical margin rule, with the opening quotation mark pushed out to the left of that rule while every other line starts flush against it — demonstrating how hanging the punctuation makes the left edge read as optically straight.

Hanging punctuation is a typographic technique that involves shifting punctuation marks past the outer boundary of a text box into the surrounding margins, typically on the left side when dealing with standard left-to-right, left-aligned text, in order to establish a smoother and more aesthetically pleasing vertical alignment. Ordinarily, keeping punctuation within the standard boundaries creates a jagged, uneven edge that disrupts how the reader’s eye perceives the text alignment, a problem frequently seen in pull quotes where large opening quotation marks push the text inward and create an awkward optical indentation. By placing these specific marks out into the negative space of the margin instead, the actual characters of the text align flawlessly along a uniform visual plane, significantly enhancing the overall rhythm and layout of the page.
