Monospace Axis (MONO)

The Monospace axis is an adjustable control featured in certain variable fonts that shifts character formatting from variable, proportional widths to a completely uniform, fixed width.

The word “monospace” set twice in blue Nexa to demonstrate a monospace axis: above, proportionally spaced over a grey ruler whose cells are all different widths; below, monospaced over a pink ruler of equal cells, every letter given exactly the same advance width.

The Monospace axis (MONO within CSS coding), is an adjustable control featured in certain variable fonts that shifts character formatting from variable, proportional widths to a completely uniform, fixed width. Within a strictly monospaced typeface or a variable font adjusted to this setting, every single character and symbol occupies the exact same amount of horizontal footprint on a page.

Following current web formatting standards, this four-letter attribute code must be written strictly in UPPERCASE, because lowercase designations are reserved exclusively for the core five attributes officially registered in the OpenType format guidelines.
