Stroke

The stroke is one of the main lines that make up the appearance of a character. The term is derived from the penmanship inherent in hand lettering and is therefore more metaphorical when talking about type.

Strokes analysed in Squad: a capital K split by colour, the upright stem in pink and the diagonal arm and leg in blue, separating the individual strokes that build the letterform.

When we talk about contrast in a typeface (or lettering or calligraphy), we’re referring to the difference between the thinnest parts and thickest parts of the stroke.
