Lettering

Lettering defines the creative practice of physically illustrating characters rather than writing them down, setting it apart as a unique discipline distinct from personal handwriting, traditional calligraphy, and mechanical typography.

The word “LETTERING” drawn by hand in thick black brush capitals that rise and fall along an uneven baseline, with a hand-drawn arrow curling over the L and an asterisk and second arrow at the G — letters drawn once for a single use rather than set from a font.

Lettering is the practice of drawing letters instead of writing them. That makes it its own discipline, separate from handwriting, calligraphy, and typography.

Unlike type, lettering doesn’t pull from a fixed set of pre-made characters. Most artists still keep a consistent structural logic across their custom letterforms. Fonts can get close to that hand-drawn feel, especially with OpenType features like contextual alternates, but it’s still an imitation.

Real lettering is made for one specific use: a unique, one-of-a-kind drawing of a chosen word or phrase.
