Blackletter

The Blackletter style, also known as Brokenscript, is a historic typographic classification encompassing letterforms that originated and gained prominence during medieval Europe.

The word “blackletter” set in heavy black lowercase built almost entirely from thick straight strokes and sharp angular joins, with no curves and very tight spacing — the dense, upright texture that gives blackletter its name.

The Blackletter style, also known as Brokenscript, is a historic typographic classification encompassing letterforms that originated and gained prominence during medieval Europe. While these typefaces are occasionally referred to collectively as Frakturs, Fraktur actually represents just one specific branch of the Blackletter family tree, alongside other distinct regional variations such as Textura, Schwabacher, Rotunda, and Bastarda. As with any classification based on historic aesthetics, modern revivals that replicate these dense, angular attributes are still categorized as Blackletter fonts, regardless of when they were actually designed.
