Letterform

A letterform denotes the distinct visual contour and structural shape of an individual alphabet character, reflecting stylistic traits that are unified across an entire font family, custom hand-lettering, or traditional calligraphy.

A single large capital R in Solomon Sans sitting between a cap-height rule and a pink baseline, presented as one letterform — the specific drawn shape of a character rather than the character itself.

A letterform is the shape of a single letter: its outline and structure. Its style carries across a whole font family, a piece of custom lettering, or a calligraphic hand.

To read a letterform, look at two things. The first is the parts that build each character: bowls, counters, stems, and shoulders. The second is the proportions that govern the whole typeface: x-height, cap height, and the reach of ascenders and descenders.
