Body

The term “body” has dual meanings in typography, referencing either the main, primary reading text within a document or the specific “body” optical size, which is designed as the functional opposite of a “display” font.

Body copy shown in Mozer and Averta: a grey Headline above a paragraph of blue running text marked off by a pink vertical rule, explaining that the body is the main run of reading matter everything else on the page is measured against.

The term body has dual meanings in typography, referencing either the main, primary reading text within a document or the specific body optical size, which is designed as the functional opposite of a display font.

Even if a chosen font family lacks dedicated optical size variations (which is true for the vast majority of typefaces) the main text block still requires the distinct structural traits inherently baked into a body-optimized design. To ensure a highly legible and comfortable reading experience, this portion of the content relies on a font size traditionally ranging from 8 to 18 points or pixels, combined with low stroke contrast and a relatively tall x-height.
