The bowl describes the curved stroke that encloses the rounded or oval interior space of a letterform, known as the counter. This structural element is most prominent in characters like b, d, o, p, and q, where the bowl forms the primary rounded shape of the letter. In some type classifications, the bowl is distinguished by its relationship to the stem: it may either attach directly to a vertical stroke or exist as a standalone enclosed shape – as in the letter o. The thickness, contrast, and curvature of the bowl are frequently used as identifying stylistic markers when comparing typefaces within the same classification.
