Cyrillic

Cyrillic is a major writing system named for Saint Cyril, whose missionary work took place during the First Bulgarian Empire. Devised in the 10th century, it drew heavily on uppercase Greek letterforms and was built to serve speakers of Old Church Slavonic.

The Bulgarian words “Българска кирилица” set large on two lines in blue, showing the distinctive Cyrillic letterforms — Б, ъ, л, г, р, с, к, и, ц — that a Cyrillic character set adds beyond the Latin alphabet.

Cyrillic is a prominent writing system whose name honours the missionary work of Saint Cyril during the era of the First Bulgarian Empire. When the script was first developed in the 10th century, its creators heavily adapted and leaned on the structural architecture of uppercase Greek letterforms to map out the new alphabet.

The script was originally engineered to provide a written foundation for speakers of the Proto-Slavic language. Over the centuries, it underwent numerous typographic reforms and expansions, evolving into the modern script utilized today by dozens of diverse languages across Eurasia and Eastern Europe.
