Dingbat

A dingbat is a glyph in a font that isn’t a letter, number, or standard punctuation mark. Most dingbats function as pictograms—simplified graphic symbols embedded in a typeface, deliberately styled to match the main character set.

Four dingbat symbols — a diamond, a star, a snowflake and a filled circle — sitting on a pink baseline.

A dingbat is a glyph within a font that does not function as a letter, number, or standard punctuation mark. The vast majority of dingbats operate as pictograms, which are simplified graphical symbols or illustrations embedded directly inside a typeface family, deliberately styled to inherit visual characteristics from the main character set.

By mirroring structural elements from the accompanying alphanumeric characters, these symbols are able to sit alongside running text in a visually cohesive manner. For example, when a designer crafts decorative or ornamental dingbats, they will typically apply the exact same stroke widths, angles, and contrast levels found in the letters, ensuring that the illustrative icons match the weight and texture of the overall page layout.
