Display

Display refers to typefaces designed for use at large sizes, such as headlines or billboards. In optical sizing, a display variant is the counterpart to a text variant, with design changes that optimize it for high-visibility use.

The word “DISPLAY” set in blue capitals with every letter drawn in a different decorative style — a swash script D, high-contrast serif I and S, a flourished P, a wedge-shaped A and a striped Y — the kind of expressive, attention-first lettering display faces are made for.

The term display refers to typefaces designed specifically to be used at large scales, such as in headlines or billboards. In the context of optical sizing, a display variant stands as the stylistic counterpart to a body text variant, featuring design alterations that optimize it for high-visibility use. These adjustments typically include a much higher contrast between thick and thin strokes, more intricate or delicate details, and tighter default letter spacing to keep large text looking cohesive.

Beyond optical sizing, display also serves as a broad classification category for an expressive, decorative genre of typefaces found within font libraries. These specialised faces are drawn exclusively for large-scale applications because their extreme ornamentation, thematic styling, or intricate textures would collapse into an illegible blur if shrunk down to body text sizes.
