FOUT (Flash of Unstyled Text)

Flash of Unstyled Text (FOUT) is a web rendering event where text briefly appears in a default system font before switching to the intended web fonts. This happens because of the time needed for the browser to fetch custom font files over the network.

Two renderings of the words “Unstyled text” stacked to demonstrate a flash of unstyled text: on top, a grey fallback serif marked by a grey vertical bar, standing in for the moment before the web font loads; below, the same words in heavy blue Glober marked by a pink vertical bar, showing the intended typeface once it arrives.

A flash of unstyled text, commonly referred to as FOUT, is a web rendering event where text momentarily appears in a default system typeface prior to transitioning into the designated web fonts. This visual shift occurs because of the time required for a user’s browser to retrieve the custom font files over the network. While it is technically possible to eliminate this abrupt typeface transition by utilizing the CSS font-display property, doing so is generally discouraged because it achieves this by completely concealing the text until the download finishes, which ultimately triggers a flash of invisible text instead.
