Rag

This term describes the uneven, fluctuating margin formed by lines of type in a text block that is not fully aligned on both sides.

Four lines of blue Averta reading “The uneven margin formed by lines of type in a block that is not aligned on both sides is called the rag.”, each line ending at a different point and marked there by a short pink vertical tick — the ticks together tracing the ragged right-hand edge.

This term describes the uneven, fluctuating margin formed by lines of type in a text block that is not fully aligned on both sides. When prose is aligned flush along the left margin, it creates an uneven profile on the opposite side known alternatively as ragged right, whereas aligning the text flush to the right produces a ragged left configuration. In contrast, text that is set with central alignment exhibits dual uneven margins, fluctuating on both the left and right borders simultaneously. Finally, completely justified typesetting eliminates this unevenness entirely, as the characters are distributed precisely to meet both the left and right boundaries of the column container.
