Readability

This concept represents the ease and comfort with which a person can absorb and process a block of text, assuming the characters themselves are discernable.

The same paragraph of blue Averta set twice side by side: on the left the lines are packed tightly together beneath a grey rule, on the right they are generously spaced beneath a pink rule — showing how line spacing alone changes how easily a block of text can be read.

This concept represents the ease and comfort with which a person can absorb and process a block of text, assuming the characters themselves are discernable. This quality depends on an interplay between three distinct elements: the individual characteristics of the reader, including eye health and visual clarity, the linguistic composition of the narrative, and the specific typographic choices made by the designer regarding font selection and layout execution.

While the micro-design of the characters directly supports this outcome, the two concepts remain distinct. The broader reading experience is driven by how engaging the prose is, the density of the vocabulary and sentence structures, and the audience’s intrinsic interest in the topic. From a design standpoint, structural attributes such as the thickness of the letterforms, the distance between characters, the vertical scale of lowercase letters, and the vertical space allotted between lines all heavily dictate how smoothly a reader can navigate the written word.
