Small Caps

Small caps are small, uppercase letterforms designed to sit alongside lowercase type. This results in the small-caps type appearing to be a more natural part of the text.

The word “CAPS” in blue Solomon Sans on a black baseline: the C rises to a full cap-height rule while “APS” stops at a lower pink rule as small capitals — showing small caps drawn to roughly x-height rather than simply shrunk-down capitals.

Small caps are just that: small, uppercase letterforms designed to sit alongside lowercase type. This results in the small-caps type appearing to be a more natural part of the text.

All-caps text can often be hard to read and shouts out at the reader. Small caps, on the other hand, feel like a more natural part of the text, and it’s typically slightly larger than the typeface’s x-height.

If using faux small caps (capitals artificially reduced in size) the small caps will look too light. This is where small caps come to play – they’re designed for that purpose.
