Transitional, or Neo-classical type design, is a category of typography that bridges the gap between traditional hand-drawn calligraphy and modern geometry by organizing fluid, humanistic stroke elements into a highly structured, symmetrical framework. Characters in this group typically showcase a sharper variation between thick and thin lines alongside a distinctly upright, vertical stress rather than a slanted axis. This classification frequently blurs together with the Didone or Modern style, which shares a similar structural philosophy but pushes the stark contrast between heavy and hairline strokes to a much greater extreme. Because these designations define visual mechanics rather than specific calendar dates, contemporary typefaces can easily fall into this category regardless of when they were actually drawn.
Great examples of this stylistic balance include digital typefaces like Gwen and Singel, while the dramatic Salina illustrates the high-contrast edge of the spectrum.
