All-caps

All-caps is the standard shorthand used when a passage of text is composed entirely of uppercase characters.

All-caps setting shown in Fester: the phrase Quiet is the new loud set entirely in capitals, underscored by a pink rule and captioned no ascenders, no descenders — every letter occupies the same band between the baseline and the cap height.

All-caps is the standard shorthand used when a passage of text is composed entirely of uppercase characters.

Because blocks of fully capitalized letters degrade readability, this styling should be restricted to brief segments like headings, titles, or isolated words meant for emphasis. It is highly discouraged to apply all-caps to standard body copy.

If uppercase styling is mandatory within a paragraph of running text, small caps are an ideal substitute. Small caps are uniquely proportioned to match the visual weight and scale of neighboring lowercase letters, preventing the text from appearing overly disruptive or visually aggressive to the reader.
