Weight Axis (wght)

The Weight axis is a core adjustment built into many variable fonts, controlling the structural thickness of letterforms. It governs overall stroke mass, spanning from everyday regular and bold to dramatic extremes like ultra-thin or ultra-black.

Four labels stacked in blue Matt beside a tall thin pink vertical rule — “wght 100” as a hairline, “wght 400” regular, “wght 700” bold and “wght 900” black — each heavier than the last, showing a weight axis thickening every stroke across its range.

The Weight axis (wght within cascading style sheets) represents a core adjustment metric built into numerous variable fonts that dictates the structural thickness of a typeface’s letterforms. This attribute governs the overall mass of the strokes, which traditionally spans from everyday regular and bold appearances to dramatic design extremes like ultra-thin or ultra-dense blocks. By utilizing the specific weight axis found in variable font technology, the total number of thickness variations available to a designer becomes practically limitless.

When writing modern style sheets, developers can assign highly specific numerical values to control the thickness of any chosen text element, such as specifying a value of 350 for standard paragraphs or 780 for emphasized text. This marks a major departure from older, non-variable web typography, where font thickness settings were strictly limited to fixed intervals of one hundred. Instead of forcing body copy to use a standard regular appearance which typically aligns with a value of 400, a layout can be tuned slightly lower to a crisper 350, while bold elements can be pushed past the typical 700 threshold to a heavier 780 without triggering the extreme thickness of a traditional 800 setting.

According to current web standards and styling specifications, this particular four-character axis identifier must be written in capital letters, as the lowercase format is reserved strictly for the core properties officially registered within the OpenType standard.
