Wide, or Extended

Wide or extended typefaces feature character designs that occupy a significant amount of horizontal real estate across a layout, positioning them at the polar opposite end of the stylistic spectrum from narrow, condensed, or compressed letterforms.

The word “HAMBURG” set twice in blue Muller Next capitals: narrow and condensed above over a short pink rule, hugely extended below over a pink rule spanning the frame — the extra horizontal room a wide or extended cut takes up.

Wide or extended typefaces feature character designs that occupy a significant amount of horizontal real estate across a layout, positioning them at the polar opposite end of the stylistic spectrum from condensed, narrow or compressed letterforms.

These spacious typefaces are never created by simply stretching a standard font sideways through digital manipulation. Instead, type designers completely redraw each character from scratch, recalculating and reshaping the internal proportions, weight balances, and stroke angles relative to the foundational design to expand the width while preventing any unnatural distortion or warping of the letterforms.
