Optical Sizes

Operating as tailored design variations, optical sizes are distinct iterations of a typeface meticulously engineered to maximize readability at specific dimensions or within particular scale thresholds.

Two large blue lowercase “o”s side by side, each with a pink bar laid across the top of its curve to measure the stroke: Gwen Display on the left with a thin bar over a fine curve, Gwen Text on the right with a much thicker bar over a sturdier curve — the same letter redrawn for large and small sizes.

Operating as tailored design variations, optical sizes are distinct iterations of a typeface meticulously engineered to maximize readability at specific dimensions or within particular scale thresholds. When intended for diminutive body layouts, these specialized variants generally feature minimized contrast between thick and thin line weights, more breathing room between individual characters, and proportionally larger x-heights to ensure clarity. Conversely, their large-scale display counterparts prioritize elegance and high contrast. Depending on the font delivery method, these diverse structural adaptations can either be distributed as entirely separate, standalone font assets or mapped directly onto a single optical size axis hidden within a modern variable font file.
